Thanks!

Though I’ve primarily spent the last few days languishing either in bed or on the sofa, doing battle with a very unwelcome bout of tonsillitis, I have tried (perhaps not hard enough) to enjoy the past day or so of sunshine just a little.

I’ve felt a strange mismatch between my mood and the blazing sunshine; I’ve mostly wanted to hide away under a blanket, emerging only for toast, soup, or a hot bath.

But I picked up this rather adorable little herb kit from Ikea recently and it looked like something I could handle, given both my heinous lack of green thumbs and also my general recent malaise……

Just so’s you know, folks, FRÖER means SEEDS.

I’m a sucker for a herb kit, and since I’m such a sucker it’s a good job this kit only cost £2. It’s also pretty much idiot-proof. There are dehydrated soil ‘pellets’ and the seeds come in the form of a paper disc that you lay on top of the soil, then cover with a final wee layer.

I’m not really into fresh mint (mojitos are urghhhhhh, long live Long Island iced tea, I will fight you) so I used a few rosemary seeds I had lying around. I also found I had some soil leftover so I planted up some rocket.

PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR THESE POOR SEEDLINGS! THEY ARE NOT IN THE BEST OF HANDS!

When I first moved into this house in late 2014 I had grand plans for the garden. I bought a sort-of raised bed, and I planted lots of garlic and onion bulbs in there. I make no secret of the shameful truth: that I have let the garden degenerate into a hideous miniature Jurassic Park. But guess what I found today, poking out of the ungodly loamy mess that was one a neat raised bed?

As you can see, Vulpe investigated. She thinks this may be young garlic, but in any case, it’s going in a victory salad. THE VICTORY OF SUCCESS.

Another cheerer-upper for me during these plague days was the early arrival of an order I made with the uh-MAZING Chiaralascura shop. I love their designs so much I just kind of want to explode. Vegan unicorn pooping out vegetables? *ASPLODE*

These guys are amazing and I really recommend supporting them. I don’t think it gets more vegan than this!

After 5 days of more or less constant confinement I am SO READY to get back to the office tomorrow. I still have one swollen tonsil that just won’t quit, but if I don’t get out soon I’ll be performing an auto-tonsillectomy so it’s probably for the best.

I sure hope you are having a swell week and have managed to enjoy a bit of sunshine!

  1. I love herb kits, but alas, I also have a black thumb. I have a palm tree (that I haven’t killed yet), and I try to grow chives in summer on the patio. That’s about it 🙂 I leave the rest to real farmers.

    1. I have two extremely black thumbs but for some reason I still try every year (a sucker for punishment?) Well done on the palm tree though! I’ve managed to kill the lowest of low maintenance plants over the years 😀

  2. I hope you’re feeling better! I’ll have to check out the designs from the Chiaralascura shop. That little notebook is too fun. I didn’t know until a couple of years ago, but garlic and onions are toxic to dogs and cats. So tell Vulpe to be careful. 🙂

    1. Thank you Cadry! I’m feeling a wee bit better and forcing myself out into the sunshine today!

Ah Vulpe is very careful not to eat anything she shouldn’t; she mostly enjoy nibbling the soil! She does enjoy chomping on grass, but we always keep an eye on her; pups can so easily get into mischief!

  3. That herb kit looks like something even I could manage! I wonder if Ikea has them here… though I suspect not because if it is actually made in Sweden there is no way that Australian customs would let that be imported. Still, I shall investigate!
I love that mug and notebook, so cool!
Hope you are back to 100% better shortly.

    1. Thank you! I’m feeling much better now after giving the tonsillitis a good bashing with antibiotics 🙂 Gosh, I always forget about the strict import rules with Australia. Can you buy any imported seeds at all?
