Thanks!

HALLO AHOY HALLO did you get your annual Vitamin D dose yesterday? Summer arrived! It’s gone now! Well, I guess it might pop back in before Christmas but I won’t hope too dearly for that to happen. I’m quite fond of Manchester’s gloom and, more generally, The Gloom Of The North, but I do like a little sit in the sunshine too. Especially since my new bargain Converse prescription sunglasses finally arrived OH YAS.

I’ve mentioned previously that my little poochums has been suffering from a curious nose affliction. She started to itch and scratch her schnozzle on 2 April, and a few days later had rubbed it raw. She was shipped off to the vet who couldn’t really pinpoint a cause but threw lots of steroids, antibiotics and eardrops at the problem in a bid to sort it out. After her precious little snout crusted up to worrying proportions and continued simultaneously to be raw and ouchy (or as C put it “IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FROM SILENT HILL“) she was returned to the vet who halted the ear drops and introduced an anti-fungal/antibacterial wound spray to the routine. Of course, my darling little doggums was also burdened with the Cone of Oppression and she spent a good week or so feeling really rather sorry for herself. Please regard the woe:

Swabs and a hair pluck were taken and we just found out that she is clear of pyoderma or ringworm and the schnozzle is finally beginning to heal properly, hurrah!

The main issue is that the wound is situated in perhaps the MOST awkward location for healing, because the Vulpster often sticks her nose into bushes or grasses, and any idle lick results in a lick of the wound, so the healing has been very slow indeed.

After a tremendously stressful battle with the pet insurance company, we’ve been left with a policy that they refuse to renew after this month’s cover expires, so while the treatment administered so far should be covered (approx £200, behhhh) nothing further will be, so we are hoping super duper hard that the nose will fully heal up soon.

That glorious snout does seem to have turned a corner, though, and we are pleased. A little romp in the garden was had yesterday evening, and the pooch is looking much more cheered, on the overall.

That the garden is showing any signs of life whatsoever is a miracle to me. It has been utterly, shamefully, unforgivably neglected in recent months, but the will is growing within me to cast off my fear of adulthood and consider mowing a lawn (“lawn”) for the first time in my life.

Wish me luck! (and please say a little prayer for a poochy’s schnozzle)

  1. Oh the poor dear! She is gorgeous. Kinda like it became a bit of a ‘hot spot’ too which always looks pretty horrifying. The cone of shame sucks but it really does help. I can be partial to gloomy weather too, goes well with bookish-ness, though I live in one of the sunniest places in Canada. Enjoy those flowers and vit D!

    1. Thank you! Yes, it was a bit grim at its crustiest but I am very pleased it’s getting there now. She is beautiful even with a horror-nose 🙂

Gloomy weather is tremendously complementary of bookishness, for sure. If it’s cold and wet there’s really no reason NOT to get under a blankie, make a cup of tea and grab a good book.

    1. Thank you! She’s been a trooper really, and I think it’s more or less stopped bothering her at all now, but we’re maintaining some cone time for now until it’s all healed up 🙂

  2. I am so glad that the nose is getting better! Fingers crossed for a speedy and complete recovery from here on in.
That is very disappointing and poor form from the insurance company. :/
If you are in need of some summer, feel free to come and visit us down here in Brisbane… we are nearly two thirds of the way through autumn but it is still sunny and very warm. Only in the last week or two have the maximums temperatures started getting below 30 degrees. Still about 27 or above, though!

    1. Thank you! Yes we are verrrrrry pleased about the nose. I was in a rage for days about the insurance company but I’ve now taken out a policy with a MUCH higher rated insurer!

Haha, I think waiting for summer here in Manchester is a foolish venture, I’d probably get sun quicker if I started saving up for flights to Australia NOW 🙂

  3. I am glad your pup’s nose is healing. I’m sorry about the insurance company. >.< I swear insurance companies are heartless black holes that only suck money out of people. It is shame that government and people don't view animals that highly and demanding unconditional care seems crazy. But then again, here in the United States there are people who want to change the rules in healthcare so they very bias again…. for some unknown reason.

    1. Ugh, I agree, I think I was unlucky and picked a particularly insidious insurer; it’s ironic because they project an image of caring SO much about animals, giving a portion of profits to charity, etc…… I’m just pleased I found out how horrible they are now! The new policy has been really highly rated by a consumer magazine so I’m feeling better about it 🙂
